Republican Entrepreneur Owen McCarthy Launches Effort To Explore A Campaign For Governor Of Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Republican entrepreneur and problem solver Owen McCarthy today announced that he is undertaking an exploratory effort to assess a future campaign for governor of Maine. McCarthy, a Maine native and resident of Gorham, is engaging with community leaders, business owners, and local residents to understand the challenges Mainers face, and the role he can play in creating a stronger Maine filled with opportunity. In making his announcement, McCarthy also unveiled a website and video discussing his vision for Maine’s future.

A native of Patten, Maine, McCarthy’s roots run deep in the values of hard work and commitment to community. Growing up in a trailer on his grandfather’s land as the son of a third-generation logger and a second-generation lunch lady, McCarthy went on to attend the University of Maine and become the first in his family to graduate from college. He later attended Harvard Business School and founded MedRhythms, a company recognized for its FDA-approved technology that has helped thousands regain mobility and independence. Under his leadership, MedRhythms has raised over $60 million, created high-quality jobs, and demonstrated that innovative world-changing companies can start and thrive in Maine.

“It never occurred to me when I was growing up that I didn’t have a lot,” said McCarthy. “I always felt like I had everything I needed to succeed, and nothing stood in my way. But I know that is not the case for everyone today, particularly after six years of one-party rule in Augusta, too many people are working hard and playing by the rules, and still falling behind.

“I’m exploring a campaign for governor because I want every Mainer to have the same opportunity I had,” he continued, “we need a Maine where regular people have a fighting chance and where state government acts as an ally, not an adversary. We need leadership focused on solving problems, not chasing headlines.

Throughout his career, McCarthy has focused on expanding opportunity—especially for young people in rural communities like the one where he grew up. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Maine System and leads the Rural Futures Fund, which invests in raising aspirations and improving outcomes for Maine students. He also serves on the board of the American Telemedicine Association, where he advocates for technology that expands access to care in rural and underserved areas.

McCarthy’s emergence on the political scene was noted recently in the Bangor Daily News’ Maine Politics Insider where attendees at a statewide Republican Party gathering said he “stood out” among a large field of prospective gubernatorial candidates.
